Leadership, Mentoring, & Support Skills

“Being a Peer Advisor has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time at William & Mary. During my freshman year, I remember how overwhelming the transition felt, and I wanted to help make that process easier for others. Through this role, I’ve been able to support new students by answering their questions, sharing resources, and helping them find their place on campus. It’s also given me the chance to develop mentorship and leadership skills while forming connections with both my advisees and fellow Peer Advisors. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to make a difference in the W&M community, I highly recommend applying!” ~ Raiha Javaid, Class of 2026, Neuroscience Major – Administrative Exec Board Chair

Utilizing Personal Experiences & Identities to Guide Others

“I was initially drawn to Peer Advising as a transfer student during my first year of college. I grew up in the military and would frequently change schools or academic systems as I moved around from place to place; this meant I had to adapt to new environments and learning standards constantly. Being a Peer Advisor has allowed me to utilize what I had to learn back then and now act as a guide for fresh faces of incoming students. The work we do helps many of them become more comfortable with what is a vast, brand-new world of learning. The online learning style allows for an accommodating setting for both you and the students you advise to become oriented with their school’s requirements and the vital tools they will use for the next several years.” ~ Yana Gleiman, Class of 2026, Economics Major – Recruitment & Communications Exec Board Chair

Personal Career Exploration & Inspiration

“I came into college knowing I wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t know what grade levels I wanted to teach. When I learned about the Peer Advising program, I was immediately curious. I had tutored K-12 grades, but I had never tried higher education. Being a Peer Advisor has not only allowed me to explore a different area in the field of education but has allowed me to realize the imperative nature of student voice in the college transition process. As a Peer Advisor, we act as one of the first voices that students hear upon choosing William & Mary – a voice that can be reassuring in what is often an overwhelming process. I highly recommend becoming a Peer Advisor if you are interested in helping incoming students get their footing as they enter college!” ~ Portia Dai, Class of 2026, English & Secondary Education Major – Training & Development Exec Board Chair

Helping Yourself and Others

“I learned more about our course selection at William and Mary as well as organization and teaching skills. I have never taught incoming students the skills that I had to learn coming into college, and it was fun to connect with them and get them ready for class!” ~ Kelly Ann Sutterfield, Class of 2026, Chemistry & Physics Major – Peer Advisor
